Pension in cryptocurrencies: Will Poland follow in the footsteps of the USA?

Donald Trump wants Americans to be able to save for retirement in Bitcoin. What does it mean?

When Donald Trump announced at a conference in Nashville that he wants to include cryptocurrencies (e.g., Bitcoin) in American retirement plans (e.g., 401(k) – the equivalent of Poland's IKE), many people shuddered. Why? Because this could be a major breakthrough. If millions of Americans started investing their retirement savings in crypto, the market could receive a new influx of money – billions of dollars. This could also make cryptocurrencies a regular part of the financial market.

Why did Trump change his mind? Because crypto is no longer a "scam"?

A few years ago, Trump criticized cryptocurrencies, calling them risky. Today, during the elections, he says something different. Why?
• Younger voters like crypto – this could help him gain votes.
• The USA wants to be a leader in blockchain technology before China or Europe does.

What would this bring?

If Trump's plans were to come into effect:
Crypto prices could rise – more money in the market = higher demand.
Crypto would no longer be "mysterious" – institutions (e.g., pension funds) would start taking them seriously.
The USA would strengthen its position as a major player in the world of digital currencies.

And in Poland? Will our pensions also be in Bitcoins?

In Poland, the topic is still little discussed. What do we know?
• Poles invest in crypto, but cautiously: it is estimated that 2-3 million people own some cryptocurrencies, but 43% consider them a "trend" (2023 report).
• Pension systems (IKE, IKZE) focus on stocks, bonds – crypto is a novelty, and novelties in finance raise concerns.
• The European Union is introducing new regulations for crypto (the so-called MiCA) starting in 2024, but does not force countries to include them in pensions.

Will Poland ever join the crypto zone?

The American experiment may show that crypto in pensions is a very good idea. If it works in the USA (e.g., prices do not crash, and savings increase), other countries – including Poland – may change their approach to this topic. However, it is not worth waiting, investing today a portion of your retirement savings. You gain an advantage over most more conservative investors.
